Before a shoot, I often get to read the copy ahead of time to get a sense of the person or tone of the article. I like knowing a bit about the subject beforehand, as it often helps me with the direction. I have to admit that after I read the copy for this shoot, I was a bit terrified. The first line depicts "Claudio Aprile is fanatical about germs and hygiene. He hates shaking hands, which all of his cooks know never to try with him." The rest of the article chronicles him in and around the restaurant painting him as a bit of a tyrant, swearing, telling off people etc. I was partially amused until I remember I had to go and work with this man. The entire cab ride to Colborne Lane I kept repeating in my head "Don't try to shake his hand, don't try to shake his hand.."
Walking into the restaurant, I put my stuff down in the most careful manner (I was so worried about doing something wrong) as one of the hosts went to go get Claudio. I put my hands in my coat pockets and kept them glued there, for fear of throwing them at him the second he walked into the room. The moment Claudio entered the dining room he had a huge smile on his face and extended his arm out to me, my brain confused and my reflexes very slow, I extended my hand to him. We exchanged a pretty solid handshake then and another one as I left the restaurant. Either the article over exaggerates, he has changed his ways since it was written or he just really likes me. I am going to go with the latter.
There is a difference between being an asshole and just telling it like it is while manning your craft, which I totally appreciate. Plus the guy got fired from his first job when he was 14 for putting five times the amount of jelly into the donuts. How cool is that? I went into the shoot slightly frightened and left with a bit of a crush. Lesson learned. Sometimes you can't read TOO much into things.

In December, my friend Hannah came for a quick visit to Toronto to film her music video for her song "Thick Skin"
This song is so good it got director Sean Wainsteim out of retirement and Hannah completely naked.
This gal is seriously the coolest and most collected person I know. The crew consisted of about 20 guys but we figured she was probably making them feel more uncomfortable then they were making her. In between takes, Hannah would sit under a heat lamp, covered in mud while wearing a pink fuzzy housecoat.
Would you have the guts to do this? My head is forever bowed to this brave girl. I'm pretty sure once you do this, you can do anything.
